Actinic keratosis is a precancerous condition that commonly occurs on sun-exposed areas such as the face and ears. These lesions typically appear as a rough or scaly patch that may or may not be visible with the naked eye. They thicken over time, turning into scaly bumps or horns. Skin biopsies are often used to confirm a diagnosis of actinic keratosis.
Because an estimated 5 to 10 percent of actinic keratoses develop into skin cancer, Dr. Berlin recommends treating them to prevent this from happening. Treatment choices include topical creams and gels, photodynamic therapy, and cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen. Dr. Berlin has published many articles in peer reviewed journals on this subject and is happy to tailor the appropriate treatment for each individual patient.
