Curettage, or ED&C (electrodessication and curettage) is often used to treat some forms of skin cancer including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other cancers on the outermost skin layer. This procedure scrapes the tumor away with a spoon-shaped medical instrument known as a curette. From there, the dermatologist then uses a cautery to destroy surrounding cells and control bleeding. Curettage requires the use of a local anesthetic to numb the skin before the procedure. The wound is then dressed and allowed to heal over the next few weeks.
